David Weed is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice is grounded in early studies of sociology, post-structuralism, and semiotics. He holds a Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Central Washington University, a Master of Arts in Sociology from Northern Arizona University, a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology from the University of Arizona, and a Bachelor of Science in Art Education from Northern Arizona University.
Weed’s work translates theoretical inquiry into material form through fabricated interfaces composed of metal enclosures, dials, switches, lights, and labeled categories. By inviting viewers to engage in acts of adjustment and calibration, the work foregrounds the tensions that arise when signs, meanings, and systems of classification are made variable.
Language functions throughout Weed’s practice as both a directive and a destabilizing force. Categorical terms appear to offer clarity or control, yet their authority is continually undermined by the shifting systems in which they operate. In this way, Weed challenges the apparent stability of familiar structures, revealing how systems of classification and interpretation are contingent, constructed, and open to revision.
